Our second time to Little Book Cliffs WHMA near Grand Junction. Camped on a ridge with wild horse trails on either side.
There’s a lot to learn from the nearly silent movement of horses in their nearly natural habitat.
Spotted about 30 of the nearly 200 wild horses in this range. Helped out with two of the veteran volunteers and learned a lot about how the BLM, a much maligned organization, has worked closely with local people to achieve and maintain something of real value. Penitent Canyon, as I’ll describe later, is another example of this cooperation among real people trying to d good things.
The heat was oppressive but we learned how to manage our water consumption and found shade when we needed it.
The drive to the WHMA is a bit sketchy—nearly two hours to cover about 20 miles— and I was concerned about the OEM tires on the Prairie Schooner II, but we all made it back out safely.
Up on Grand Mesa, the temperature dropped to the mid 70s. Still not a smart idea to attempt the full Palisade Plunge by myself so I sampled the upper section. The Blackwater Bikes folks (Sue Haywood and co.) rode the whole Plunge a couple of days later.

It was time to say goodbye to Carolyn and hello to Adam, who would be flying in to Montrose the next day for a week of mountain biking. So far, the itinerary that Karen had arranged was holding up nicely.
